What to Do on Embarkation Day on a Disney Cruise

Embarkation day on a Disney Cruise is pure magic — but it can also feel a little overwhelming. There’s excitement, crowds, rain (in our case!), and so much to explore.
If you’re wondering what to do on Day 1 of your Disney Cruise, here’s exactly how we spent ours — plus tips I’d absolutely recommend for your family.
1. Start with a Sit-Down Lunch (Skip the Buffet Rush)
While many families head straight to the buffet, we opted for a rotational dining restaurant instead — and I’m so glad we did.
We had lunch in Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure aboard the Disney Wish, and it was the perfect calm way to begin our cruise.
✨ Tip: One of the main dining rooms is typically open on embarkation day. It’s less crowded, more relaxed, and a great way to ease into vacation mode.
2. Explore Deck 4 for Surprise Character Moments
One of the most magical parts of our entire cruise happened right on Deck 4.
We weren’t in a formal meet-and-greet line — we were just exploring — when characters began walking through.
Mickey took my girls by the hand and walked with them.
Goofy danced with them.
It was spontaneous, sweet, and completely unforgettable.
These surprise interactions feel even more magical than the scheduled character lines.
✨ Tip: Walk the ship early. Characters often move between locations on embarkation day.
3. Sail Away Party Reality Check
It was raining during our cruise departure, so the Sail Away Party was moved indoors to the Grand Hall (Atrium).
And honestly? It was packed.
We couldn’t see much and were a little disappointed. If this happens on your sailing:
Arrive very early
Or skip it and enjoy open decks while everyone else crowds inside
The Sail Away Party is fun, but it’s not the only magical moment of the cruise.
4. Tour the Oceaneer Club (Even If You Don’t Plan to Use It)
We knew we planned to spend most of our cruise doing activities together as a family — so we didn’t intend to use the kids club much.
But touring the Oceaneer Club (Deck 2) on embarkation day was one of the BEST decisions.
Inside you’ll find:
Marvel Super Hero Academy
Fairytale Hall
Character walk-through hallways
And yes… Rapunzel’s slide (which my girls LOVED)
Letting the kids explore with us made them feel comfortable and excited — without pressure to stay.
✨ Tip: Open House hours on embarkation day are perfect for family walkthroughs.
5. Check Out Hero Zone (Deck 12)
If you have boys (or active kids in general), don’t skip Hero Zone.
This space includes:
Basketball courts
Ping pong
Foosball
Game space
My boys immediately said, “We’re coming back here.”
It’s a great spot to scope out early so you can plan downtime later in the cruise.
6. Grab Ice Cream at Mickey & Friends Festival of Foods
Located on Deck 11 midship, the quick-serve dining area is open-air and super convenient.
Options include:
Mickey’s Smokestack Barbecue
Donald’s Cantina
Daisy’s Pizza Pies
Goofy’s Grill
Sweet Minnie’s Ice Cream
We chose soft serve cones from Sweet Minnie’s — and they were a hit. (And yes, we went back again.)
✨ Tip: Embarkation day is perfect for exploring these quick-serve options before peak dinner rush times.
Why Embarkation Day Is So Important
Day 1 sets the tone for your entire cruise.
Instead of rushing:
✔️ Explore
✔️ Check out activity spaces
✔️ Capture photos before outfits change
✔️ Grab ice cream
We treated it like a “ship discovery day” — and it made the rest of our cruise feel organized and relaxed.
What I’d Do Again (And What I’d Skip)
Would absolutely do again:
Main dining room lunch
Deck 4 exploring for surprise characters
Touring Oceaneer Club together
Ice cream cones on Deck 11
Would adjust:
Arrive earlier for indoor sail away if weather looks questionable
Embarkation day doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With just a loose plan and a little flexibility, it can be one of the most magical days of your trip.
